Central Virginia Crime Stoppers Seeks Funds For Another Year's Work

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Crime Stoppers helps solve crimes but due to a lack of funding, the program is in danger.

"There's no suspect suddenly there is an arrest, how does that happen? Well Crime Stoppers is the one way that happens," explained Chief Parks H. Snead of the Lynchburg Police Department.

Harris Corporation presented Central Virginia Crime Stoppers with a 1,000 dollar check, just a small dent in the 10,000 dollars they need to raise for another year's work.

In the past five years, Crime Stoppers tips have led to 75 arrests in Lynchburg alone.

This includes two women who allegedly stole 800 dollars worth of DVDs from Target on Wards Road.

"Certainly if it was a good solid tip, we can give up to a thousand dollar reward," said Central Virginia Crime Stoppers interim president Bonnie Burley Crews.

A key to its success is the guarantee that a tipster's identity won't be revealed, but Burley Crews says it is also their most expensive feature.

"All these services doing it the way that we do cost a great deal of money per month," said Burley Crews. "We do not receive any funding from a national organization, we do not receive any government funding what so ever."

Crime Stoppers raises money through fundraiser's, business donors, and the community. They hope that will be enough to keep them going another year.
