BWWB remain against state expansion bills

Posted: Updated:

The Birmingham Water Works Board continues its opposition against state bills aimed at expanding the board.

Efforts now turn to the House after the Alabama Senate passed a version of the bill this week sponsored by State Senator Jabo Waggoner (R-Vestavia Hills). Waggoner's bill seeks to the expand the Board to include three non-Birmingham members: two from Jefferson County and another board position that would rotate representation for surrounding counties.

BWWB Chairman tells ABC 33/40 the utility is being treated unfairly and that some lawmakers are using a board-commissioned audit to support changing it. That audit found payroll and management problems.

Robinson says the board continues to fix all issues.

"It's like feeling bad and going to the doctor and he tells you that you have cancer and then you become the problem because you have cancer," Robinson says. "That is crazy. And it's ludicrous. But that's what people are doing."

Sen. Waggoner and Representative Paul DeMarco (R-Homewood) stick behind their bills.

Birmingham democrats hope to defeat the House version. Both bills also seek to cap the utility's board pay, mandate term limits and require public hearings before rate increases.
