BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Spring Breakers ran into heavy traffic Saturday, sometimes at a standstill, on Interstate 65.

People heading South could deal with similar delays Sunday.

"It's a little frustrating."

Spring Break is here, but for many, it was a slow start to their vacation destination.

Justin Crisler says, "It's obvious people are wanting to get away for the weekend. The last thing they want to be worried about is being stuck in traffic."

Traffic backed up for miles on I-65 Southbound as ALDOT crews made concrete pavement repairs.

Kimberly Shelley says, "It's probably not a good day to be doing this, especially on a day with people going out of town heading towards the beach."

Two lanes were shut down between the I-459 interchange and the Cahaba River Bridge.

Crisler says, "Coming from north Alabama, we saw a lot of Tennessee plates and Indiana and Ohio, we passed several different people coming from out of state."

He was trying to find an alternate route to bypass the traffic.

Rodriquez Bonner says, "It is kind of crazy. you got all week to make it happen and on the weekends with everybody out going shopping, it's terrible."

Many people wondered why ALDOT chose this weekend to do the work.

Engineer Brian Davis told us pot holes in the area were too dangerous not to address and ALDOT did not want to impact the busy week day traffic commute.

Kimberly Shelley wants to see improvements. "There's a lot of areas on 65 I know when I'm driving, I'm like constantly bumping up and down, so it's a good thing they're getting it fixed."

ALDOT is asking drivers to consider using Highway 31 southbound through the weekend, but that route was very busy as well. The lanes will be closed until 5 o'clock Monday Morning.
