General Assembly Will Reconvene Monday

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA- Virginia's General Assembly is going back to work Monday to try and come to a decision on the state budget. Governor McAuliffe called for the special session after lawmakers could not agree over an expansion of Medicaid.

Congress voted on and passed a budget a few weeks ago. However, Delegate Garrett said Governor McAuliffe would veto that budget. The Governor wants the budget to include Medicaid expansion. Garrett said this is not best for the state since money going to Medicaid Expansion would take away from our local school systems, transportation, and public safety. He said he and so many others, Republican or Democrat, approved and were happy with the budget. It passed at 70%.

Garrett said he thinks Medicaid Expansion should be kept separate from the budget, while the Governor thinks it is a crucial part to add in. The hope is an agreement will be reached that is best for the Commonwealth.

"We passed a balanced budget that is really good for our area, but yet, as we speak today the Governor said, 'Nope, we're gonna tie the two together.' Now we have no budget before us, we have no opportunity before us until we get back tomorrow to even begin that discussion again and it's very frustrating," said Garrett.

Garrett said that until the state budget is put into order, there is no finality for the local counties to process their budgets.
