HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Hummelstown bridge that was closed for repairs three weeks ago will remain shut down until it is replaced next year.

The Duke Street Bridge, at the intersection of N. Duke Street and South Hoernerstown Road, turned out to be in worse shape than initially believed, according to Dauphin County spokeswoman Amy Richards.

When the county-owned bridge was closed March 4, the temporary repairs were expected to be completed in mid-April, but Richards said the county's engineer found further deterioration during a more detailed inspection and determined that it is neither practical nor cost effective to make repairs.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has also closed the Swatara Creek around the bridge to watercraft and fishermen.

The 103-year-old bridge will be demolished as part of a $3.5-million replacement project in 2015.
