Work on Toomer's Corner to start this week

AUBURN - AL -

Rolling of the new Toomer's Corner may not be that far away. Work gets underway Wednesday.

To prepare for the work on Auburn's campus, the eagles on top of the 1917 gates have already been taken down. They will be replaced once work is done in the fall.

As part of the new design, trees will be planted. The soil will be replaced, and circular seating will be installed.

Work is expected to be finished by the Auburn Tigers kick off this fall. But in the meantime, people will be asked to use midblock crosswalks on West Magnolia Avenue and South College Avenue to avoid the construction.

The iconic corner was redesigned after the oak trees were poisoned in 2010.

Alabama fan Harvey Updyke, Jr. pleaded guilty in connection to it.
