It's opening day and time to celebrate spring

Posted: Updated:

Baseball fans tried hard, but this opening day of baseball season will not be declared a national holiday. Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith and Budweiser got the idea circulating by creating a White House petition to have opening day a recognized national holiday.

The petition garnered well over the 100,000 signatures needed to get a response from the White House. The response came Friday from baseball fan and Principal Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest. In part, Earnest wrote, "While we are sympathetic to your pitch to make Opening Day a national holiday, it's a little outside our strike zone: creating permanent federal holidays is traditionally the purview of Congress. So, it's up to the men and women on Capitol Hill to decide whether to swing at this pitch."

That decision won't stop true baseball fans from yelling, "Play ball!" Today, every fan has a dream of which team will make it to the World Series. Just 162 games to go.
