WAYNESBORO, Pa. (WHTM) -

Two Maryland residents were arrested for shoplifting after a pursuit in Franklin County over the weekend, police said.

Susan Kershner, 45, of Smithsburg, Md., was charged with retail theft, fleeing and eluding, and two counts of DUI for the incident Saturday afternoon, according to Washington Township police.

Her passenger, 57-year-old Barry Edington, also of Smithsburg, Md., was charged with retail theft and public drunkenness,  police said.

Police said an officer on a traffic stop in the Peebles parking lot, at 1525 East Main Street, was notified by a passerby that two people had just stolen merchandise from the department store and had just passed the officer, police said.

A pursuit for the vehicle ended at 426 Clayton Avenue, where the officer found Kershner to be driving drunk and the vehicle she was driving to have stolen merchandise from Peebles, police said.

The stolen merchandise totaled nearly $680, police said.

Both suspects were arrested and taken to Franklin County Prison.
