National Walking Day

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Americans are spending more time than ever sitting in front of screens, at work and home.  National Walking Day is April 2, 2014.  To celebrate the day, Mayer Electric Supply Company is asking employees to take a one-mile walk Wednesday afternoon.  More than 200 employees could be walking at 1:30 p.m.  The event is a collaboration between Mayer Electric and the American Heart Association.

All Birmingham residents are encouraged to walk for at least 30 minutes April 2. Getting at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week will improve circulation, lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and promotes weight loss.  You can do that with activities like very brisk walking.

All cardiovascular diseases combined claim more lives each year than the next three leading causes of death combined.  Just in Alabama alone, heart disease and stroke claim more than 15,000 lives a year.  Lacing up and getting moving can get you moving toward a healthier heart, though.

Mayer Electric employees will also be signing up April 2 to participate in the Birmingham Heart Walk.  That event will be taking place June 28 at the Uptown Entertainment District. The company has committed to donating $10,000 for the American Heart Association through employee fundraising efforts. For more information about the Heart Walk, visit www.birminghamheartwalk.org.
