LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

Two Lancaster County men who complained about losing a dollar bill touched off an investigation that led to criminal charges against them.

Justin Jenkins, 24, of Lititz, and Andrew McCracken, 25, of Lancaster, were trying to steal coins from a change machine at a car wash Thursday, according to East Lampeter Township police.

The pair had inserted both a $20 bill and $1 bill attached to a string of tape so that they could pull out the bills once the change was released, police said.

The $20 bill was rejected and the $1 bill became stuck, and when Jenkins and McCracken demanded their dollar back, an employee had to call in the owner to open the machine.

The owner, however, checked the video surveillance first and discovered what the pair were up to, police said, and officers went to the Highland Car Wash and found Jenkins and McCracken still waiting for their dollar bill to be returned.

Both were charged with attempted theft and possession of instruments of crime, then placed  in the Lancaster County Prison on $2,000 bail and unrelated probation violations.
