LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Lancaster County woman lost more than $4,500 in an ongoing telephone scam where thieves pretend to be a relative of their victims.

Manheim Township police said the woman received a phone call from a person claiming to be her grandson, and that he was in a hospital in Mexico and needed money to pay his bills.

After the woman sent money via Western Union, the person pretending to be her grandson repeatedly called for more money for plane tickets and other needs, police said.

She sent a total of $4,550 before calling her grandson directly and determining that she had been scammed, police said.
