Acting Deputy Secretary of Defense Christine Fox spoke to students at the Army War College in Carlisle Monday.
Fox talked to students about opportunitIes and budget challenges facing the Army. Worse case scenario the active Army could be reduced to 420,000 soldiers, down from 520,000.
"Which is very small and too small, in our view, to support our strategic needs," said Fox. "We believe in the department that we absolutely need a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) in order to reduce the funding that is available to the department and fit in everything in that we have to do."
The Army War College Commandant says Fox's appearance at the college is evidence the Department of Defense values education.
"Should congress find the appetite for a BRAC everything must and will be on the table. Because of who we are, what we do and our geographic location I feel very positive that the Carlisle barracks and the U.S. Army War College will endure," said Major General Tony Cucolo, Commandant U.S. Army War College.
Congress has yet to approve the current BRAC request, which is for 2017.
