Halifax Regional Kicks Off Donate Life Month With Organ Donor Drive

Posted:

Halifax Co., VA - It's something you can do in less than five minutes - and could save up to nine lives.

We're talking about becoming an organ donor.

Halifax Regional Hospital teamed up with LifeNet Health to hold an organ donor drive Monday.

Representatives from LifeNet Health have been traveling across our area to be the voice of thousands of people waiting for the donation of a lifetime.

"There are over 120,000 people waiting for a life-saving transplant. So, this is a real health crisis that we have nationally, " said Community Education Coordinator Kia Potts.

LifeNet volunteer Gail Farmer can sympathize with those on the list. She got a kidney transplant in 2008 after losing her own to sarcoidosis.

"Someone saved my life and if I can give information to others, hopefully there are more lives to be saved, " Farmer said.

Thanks to a donor, Gail was able to see her children graduate. Now she travels the state educating others about the importance of becoming a donor.

"I became a dedicated volunteer. I knew how important it was to sign up to be an organ donor," said Farmer.

Halifax County has a low registration rate overall, but folks like Keisha Jackson, who has worked at the hospital for 15 years, have actually seen the number of lifesaving organ donations increase in the last few years.

"The last two years we've had 14 successful donations, and that includes organ and tissue, " Jackson said.

According to Jackson, at least three of those donations were from living donors. They hope to see that number continue to rise as groups like Life Net maintain their commitment to educating the community.

These kind of drives will continue throughout the month of April, which is National Donate Life Month. If you want to become a donor or learn more about donation drives in your area, go to donatelifevirginia.com.
