Giant announces peppercorn recall

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -

Following a recall by Frontier Natural Products Co-Op, Giant Food Stores has removed select varieties of organic peppercorns due to potential salmonella contamination.

Customers who have purchased the following products should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to their store for a full refund:

  • Frontier Peppercorns Black Whole organic, 2.12 oz., UPC 8983618435, lot codes 3246 and 3288
  • Simply Organic Black Pepper Whole organic, 2.65 oz., UPC 8983618524, lot codes 3221 and 3262

Giant/Martin's said it has received no reports of illnesses to date.

Salmonella infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.

The most common manifestations of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.
