CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -
A fatal crash involving two tractor-trailers and an SUV temporarily closed all northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Carlisle.
State police said the driver of the SUV, a 26-year-old from Carlisle, crossed the median at mile marker 47.5 in South Middleton Township and collided head-on with one of the tractor-trailers at 1:35 p.m., killing both drivers.
A passenger in the tractor-trailer was transported to Hershey Medical Center for treatment of unknown injuries, police said.
The second truck driver, who swerved to avoid the crash and went up an embankment to the right of the highway, was not injured.
I-81 North was shut down between Exit 45 for College Street and Exit 47 for Hanover Street for hours.
Northbound traffic was detoured to Route 34 at Exit 47, to Route 641 in Carlisle, and back to the interstate at Exit 49.
