UPDATE: Shaquille Hancock is scheduled to be in court Tuesday morning to set his trial date.
19-year old Hancock has been indicted on felony child abuse and cruelty charges.
He is pleading ignorance to knowingly hurting the child.
Rocky Mount, VA - An investigators says a Rocky Mount man likely held a child in bath water that was so hot. it gave the toddler second degree burns.
19 year old Shaquille Hancock has been indicted on felony child abuse and cruelty charges.
He's free on bond awaiting his next court date.
Police were alerted to the case on March 13th when the boy's mother brought him to Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital after returning from work and finding suspected abuse.
Hancock is listed as the mother's boyfriend and had been babysitting the boy.
Rocky Mount Police and child protective agencies were called by hospital officials.
The child's burns were so severe the child had oozing blisters, according to Investigator Jason Divers who is leading the investigation.
Because of his injuries, the child was first sent to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital before being transferred to VCU.
The boy's burns were to his legs and buttocks.
He spent about a week in the hospital before returning to Franklin County to recover.
Investigators say they will present evidence that shows the boy was put into water hot enough to cause burns in seconds as well as evidence the boy was physically held in the tub.
"A two year old would have fought as soon as they were placed in the bathtub and with those burns... right now, to our knowledge, the child did try to get out," said Divers.
Investigator Divers says Hancock denied knowing the child had been burned - which is why they say he never took the boy to the hospital.
Hancock's trial will be set next week.
A restraining order is in place to keep Hancock away from the boy.
