Pa. grants waiver for wounded veterans ride

Posted: Updated:

The state Department of Transportation said today it will grant a special waiver to a Lancaster County man so that he can drive a vintage farm tractor through Pennsylvania during his cross-country trip for wounded war veterans.

Ivan Stoltzfus, a retired farmer and auctioneer from Honey Brook, plans to drive a restored 1948 John Deere from New Jersey to California and raise $1 million for the Wounded Warriors Project.

State Rep. Gordon Denlinger (R-Lancaster) said the trip was nearly road-blocked by Pennsylvania road regulations before PennDOT granted the waiver.

"We now have a positive outcome for Mr. Stoltzfus," Denlinger said. "After working with PennDOT legal staff, we were able to find a provision in law that will allow Ivan to continue his trip to raise money and awareness for those whom we can never truly repay."

The tractor, retrofitted with a 1984 Peterbilt cab, has all the necessary equipment required by the federal Department of Transportation for use on U.S. highways.

Stoltzfus, however, was told last month that he would need to have written permission from every municipality he would pass through, configure a traffic control plan to be approved by PennDOT and all involved police departments, and have an escort for his entire journey across the state.
