Averett University Hosts IDA National Championship

Chatham, VA-- There were almost 100 top collegiate equestrians from all over the country and Canada in Chatham this weekend.

Averett University hosted this year's Intercollegiate Dressage Association National Championship at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham. Dressage is the art of riding and training a horse so it develops obedience, flexibility and balance.

The competition requires a lot skill because the riders have never trained with the horses they use at the event.

"They basically have to get on, figure out what aids the horse needs , whether he needs, stronger, lighter or softer aids, and get this horse to go through it's movement with just ten minutes of practice," said Beth Beukema, President of the Intercollegiate Dressage Association.

Schools that are competing include Averett University, Stanford University, Delaware Valley, and the University of Connecticut.
