William Lee, Shakayla Thomas win state's top basketball honors

William Lee of Dallas County and Sylacauga's Shakayla Thomas earned top honors at the Mr. and Miss Basketball banquet.

Lee is the 30th Mr. Basketball in state history and Thomas is the 27th Miss Basketball. The awards were presented by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Lee, who will play at UAB next season, helped Dallas County to the Class 4A state title last month. Alabama's Gatorade Player of the Year averaged 22.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 9.2 blocks a game in his senior season.

Thomas has a scholarship to attend college at Florida State after finishing her high school career as the all-time leading rebounder in AHSAA history. Thomas grabbed 2,643 career rebounds and scored 4,242 career points which ranks fourth all-time by the AHSAA.

Thomas helped Sylcauga advance to the 5A championship game last season, where the Aggies lost to Wenonah. She averaged 33.1 points, 12.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game in her senior season.

    ANNISTON, Alabama -- Anniston police are investigating a shooting outside a local bar that wounded Jacksonville State running back Troymaine Pope.
