DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. -- A Sylvania teen is facing numerous charges following his arrest in connection with a residential burglary and a theft at a car wash in Henagar, DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said Thursday.

Kaleb Austin Hamby, 19, is charged with first-degree theft of property, first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree burglary, two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the sheriff's office, Henagar police reported $3,000 worth of damage and a missing money terminal valued at $10,000 at the Wonder Wash on Highway 40 on the morning of Apr. 11. The following day police located the money terminal in an undisclosed, remote area of Henagar, and DeKalb County sheriff's deputies began an investigation and received tips that connected the incident to a residential burglary in Sylvania.

Investigators later obtained warrants against Hamby, who was arrested Tuesday night and booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center on bonds totaling $48,000. Harris said Hamby's arrest is the first step in cracking what appears to be a larger theft case.

"I'm glad we are making headway in these thefts in the Northern area of the County," Harris said. "We have several cases working on thefts County wide and we hope to make more arrests soon."

According to Harris, deputies were able to recover most of the stolen items from the burglary. The sheriff's office will continue its county-wide investigation into the string of property crimes and drug-related activity.

"We are going to continue these investigations until everyone responsible is held accountable," Harris said.
