Parents react to Hoover bus fees

Posted: Updated:

"I think our board is very out of touch with working families in Hoover and what their budgets are like," said Hoover parent, Lisa Singer.

Singer has two children in the Hoover school system. She says paying a fee for school bus services will not put a significant strain on her family. But she's concerned for those families who will have a hard time, among other problems that could arise.

"I am concerned about safety of kids getting to school. The attendance problems we're going to have when people can't afford the buses and they don't have reliable transportation. Obviously the parents who have more children to transport are going to have a harder time," she said.

The annual cost for one student is set at $40.75 per month. Families with multiple children will pay reduced fee per child. And the fee to ride will be even less for students who qualify for reduced or free lunches.

Singer says, even with a reduced fee, some families will not be able to afford it.

"Even for a free lunch kid, you're looking at $150 a year. And those kids get free lunches because their parents can barely afford to put food on the table at home. So I don't know how those people are going to come up with 150 dollars. I think it's going to be a big hardship."
