Meeting held on controversial pipeline project

LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A meeting of the Lancaster County Commissioners was "standing room only" Tuesday for a discussion of a natural gas pipeline that would run through central Pennsylvania.

Commissioners and residents were given the chance to view maps of the proposed pipeline that would carry natural gas from the Marcellus Shale region.

Williams Partners, who would run the line, is gathering information and public input on the Atlantic Sunrise project.

Company officials were asked what impact a natural gas leak would have on the environment, including waterways. One official said a leak would have minimal impact.

Dozens of people protested outside the meeting.

The possible path of the line goes through residential properties and nature preserves.

Williams Partners has said its plans are not set in stone.

The federal government, not local leaders, will either approve or reject the proposal.
