Tiny bear cub found wandering outside hair salon

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A tiny bear made its way out of the woods and into the arms of a Dauphin County business owner Tuesday afternoon.

Brenda Chubb said one of her customers at That's Hair Biz noticed what she thought was a stray dog outside the front door. When Chubb went outside to check it out, she realized it was actually a bear. Concerned for its safety, she picked the animal up using a towel and brought it inside.

"He was hungry," she said. "I had a fig here and so we were feeding him the fig, without the seeds."

"Here's a little baby bear -- got estranged from his mom and wandered on in for a haircut," fellow business owner Joseph Staudt said.

Staudt said many of his customers have recently spotted a mother bear with her cubs around the same area of Route 22 in West Hanover Township.

"Hopefully nothing happened to her, and you now have three other cubs wandering around as well," he said.

The bear, who Brenda and Joseph named 'Boo Boo,' was picked up by the Pennsylvania Game Commission around 4 p.m. Tuesday and taken to a local veterinary hospital for the night.

A spokesperson for the clinic told abc27 the bear was given an initial clean bill of health. The Game Commission will next take steps to find the mother and reunite her with the cub.
