Police: Oxford mother and 7-year-old son killed after train crashes into their car at railroad crossing

OXFORD, Ala. -- A woman and her child were killed after a train struck their vehicle at a railroad crossing in Oxford Saturday morning, police confirmed to ABC 33/40.

According to police, a 35-year-old Oxford woman and her 7-year-old son died around 7 a.m. after the car they were passengers in was struck by a Norfolk Southern train at the Coleman Road crossing, which is off Highway 78. The driver, a 20-year-old woman and daughter of the mother killed, was airlifted to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her condition is unknown at this time.

Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge said the lights and gate at the crossing were functioning prior to the accident, which remains under investigation.
