PPL Electric Utilities is warning customers of scam artists who threaten to disconnect service because of overdue bills.
The utility said it has received several complaints in recent weeks from business and residential customers about callers claiming to be from PPL.
The scammers claim that the customers are behind on their bills, and demand immediate payment with a pre-paid debit card, the utility said in a news release.
Anyone with doubts about a caller claiming to represent PPL should hang up and verify their account balance by calling 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775) or by going to PPL's website, www.pplelectric.com.
PPL said it is working with police on the scam cases, and has notified the state attorney general's office.
