Pa. bill would hike penalty for fleeing fatal crash

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

A Pennsylvania lawmaker says she plans to introduce legislation that would increase the penalty for fleeing the scene of a fatal traffic crash.

Rep. Tarah Toohil (R-Luzerne) said under current law, a drunk driver who kills someone faces a prison sentence of at least three years, but drivers charged with fleeing the scene of a crash face a mandatory minimum sentence of one year.

Her bill would increase the minimum sentence for fleeing to three years.

Toohil said the current legal loophole gives drunk drivers an incentive to flee a crash because they may face lesser charges.
