Pa. House passes bill to regulate body art businesses

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The state House of Representatives has passed legislation to regulate businesses that offer body piercings, tattoos and other body art.

House Bill 1249 would require such businesses to obtain a $100 license that would have to be visibly posted. The license would be renewed annually and could be revoked or denied if requirements are not met.

The Department of Health would conduct annual random inspections and would set health and safety standards to ensure body art procedures are performed in sterile environments and by qualified professionals.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Rosemary Brown (R-Monroe/Pike), said current law has no oversight of body art facilities.

She said many people wrongly assume the businesses are licensed, and there is a real concern that piercings and other services are sometimes performed in less-than-sterile environments.
