Activist wants news on legislative surplus

A political activist wants answers from Pennsylvania lawmakers.

The legislature audits its reserve fund every year and releases the numbers in late December.

It's May and taxpayers are still waiting to find out how much of their money is in the fund.

Last year, there was a $140 million surplus.

"The average person should care because we have one of the most expensive legislatures in the country," Eric Epstein of Rock the Capital said. "Last year we spent $307 million to run the legislature."

"They're holding a $140 million surplus. This is all taxpayer money. We're facing a billion dollar deficit. That surplus, that slush fund's gotta be on the table this year to fill the budget gap."

The legislative Audit Commission switched chairmen in April. The new chairman hopes to release the audit mid-June.
