Susquehanna AD charged with theft from former team

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

The athletic director for the Susquehanna Township School District has been charged with the theft of funds from one of his former teams.

Robert L. Deibler, 48, of Middletown, was charged Wednesday with one count of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received.

Deibler, who stepped down from his coaching position at Middletown Area High School last year, is accused of stealing $7,300 from the school's football team.

"Basically, the money came from fund-raising events and they went to Mr. Deibler's personal account for his personal use," Lower Swatara Township Police Chief Richard Brandt said.

Police said the investigation began at the end of the 2013 school year when they received information from district officials that Deibler may have misused teams funds raised by a booster club.

According to court documents, Deibler told investigators he needed the money to pay bills and other personal expenses.

Officials said he has agreed to pay full restitution to the booster club.

Deibler coached at Middletown from 2011 to 2013 after a long coaching career at Steelton-Highspire.

Susan Anthony, a Susquehanna Township school spokeswoman, said the district became aware of the charges against Deibler on Wednesday and placed him on administrative leave while facts are gathered about the matter.

Anthony said in light of the allegations, the district has already reviewed its process for the handling of funds, including booster monies. She said in all cases there are safeguards in place so that the receipt of and accounting for those funds is not solely in the hands of any one person or the athletic director.

Deibler has waived his preliminary hearing. His formal arraignment in Dauphin County court is scheduled June 27.
