Parts of central and eastern Pennsylvania saw large, damaging and heavy hail during severe thunderstorms Thursday afternoon.

In Wyomissing, golf ball-sized hail crashed through skylights of the Berkshire Mall, sending shards of glass everywhere but causing no injuries to shoppers or employees.

The hail also shattered the rear window of at least one car in the Berks County borough, leaving one large opening and several smaller holes in the glass, while in nearby Reading, streets and yards were covered as if it were winter.

Golf ball and tennis ball-sized hail was reported in Danville, in Montour County.

WNEP-TV reported nearly 300 vehicles at one car dealership had either smashed windshields, broken mirrors or dents, while hundreds more automobiles were damaged in the parking lots of the Geisinger Medical Center, where people had to wait hours for a tow because of all the calls.

WPVI-TV reported that a jetliner flew through a hailstorm on its descent into Philadelphia and landed safely with a cracked windshield. No one was injured.

US Airways told the Associated Press that only one layer of the multi-layered windshield was cracked on Flight 768 from Orlando. The airline said the windshield damage was possibly caused by the hail but an investigation is incomplete.
