Martinsville, VA - A big check from winning a business plan competition helped two sisters make their dream come true.
The competition was all part of the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association's effort to bring new and unique businesses to the area.
The two sisters won $12,000 in December from the Uptown Upstart Business Plan Competition. Now, their new store, Sleep-Love-Play Baby Boutique, sits on East Church Street in Uptown Martinsville.
Amy Reed and Kari Turner say although they don't have a business background, they've always dreamed of opening a boutique together.
They say the competition was a perfect way to learn how to start a business.
Executive Director of the Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association Liz Secrest says their business plan won, because they pitched an idea that fits well with what Uptown Martinsville needs.
"I loved it. I mean, there's just nothing in this area anywhere close to a baby boutique like that. So we're very excited, one just to have it the area, but two, to have it in Uptown is wonderful," Secrest said.
