National Guard continues to fight Harrisburg blight

Posted: Updated:

The National Guard continued boarding up condemned homes in Harrisburg on Tuesday but this time, the boards weren't bare.

Last week, the project began to keep drug users, vandals and squatters out of condemned homes.

Now, the Guard is using boards with murals painted on them, to reduce the eyesore factor.

"It's not just about making these buildings safe, it's about making them attractive. It's about changing the perspective of people on the street. Having people look with pride at a beautiful tree or another painted design," said Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse.

Papenfuse also said he will be proposing new legislation at Tuesday's city council meeting to continue the fight against blight.
