Fire company apologizes to same-sex couple

Posted: Updated:
MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Lisburn Community Fire Company is apologizing to a same-sex couple for the actions of a volunteer who made them feel unwelcome to hold their wedding at its social hall.

Fire company director Mike Grimes issued the apology Wednesday to Julie Pilger and Melanie Kirk of Mechanicsburg.

"We deeply regret this incident and any hurt our volunteer may have caused to Julie and Melanie," Grimes said in a statement. "Our volunteer’s views on same-sex marriage do not reflect the feelings or the position of the Lisburn Community Fire Company.

"We do not condone intolerance or discrimination," Grimes said. "Our facilities are available for weddings to both heterosexual and same sex couples. We are community supported and we in turn support all members of our community."
