Trooper shot in West Hanover Twp., suspect in custody

PAXTONIA, Pa. (WHTM) - The suspect responsible for the officer-involved shooting in West Hanover Township, Dauphin County is in custody, police said late Sunday night.

Just before 7 p.m., troopers responded to a shots fired call in the area of Clover Lane and Green Hill Road.

State police said the incident all began when a trooper, responding to reports of the suspect mowing down mailboxes with his car, responded to a home on the 7600-block of Green Hill Road. Investigators say there, he was met with gunfire. PSP spokesperson Trooper Robert Hicks said the responding trooper was able to return gunfire before retreating.

When responding officers arrived, they found that trooper with four gunshot wounds to his arm and thigh. He was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center where he is currently listed in stable condition, Hicks said.

According to investigators, the 49-year-old suspect barricaded himself inside a home for a little more than an hour before he was taken into custody. He is also recovering from a gunshot wound that occurred at some point during the incident.

No names or conditions have been released at this point.
