Hanover shaken by rash of arsons, thefts

Posted: Updated:
HANOVER, Pa. (WHTM) -

A typically quiet, family-friendly neighborhood was shaken up over the weekend in Hanover.

"A lot of the neighbors got hit," said Amanda Mooney. "There were eight in the cul-de-sac alone that I live in, and it's really scary."

Police say two cars were set on fire early Saturday morning. One car was nearly burnt to the ground. A garage nearby also went up in flames on Moul Avenue.

Mooney says a number of the victims are police officers.

"My fiance is a police officer. Our neighbors are police officers. And it seems as though no matter how much protection you have living in a development, and you think it's a nice neighborhood, anything can happen no matter where you live," she said.

Both of Mooney's cars were broken into, but her neighbor's car was even worse.

"My first reaction was is everyone OK?" said Howard Aburn. "My son has a 1-year-old child and a wife."

Aburn's son is away on business. He stopped by to check out the damage to his son's 2012 SUV which was set on fire and now sits in the driveway as a total loss.

"It's frustrating to put somebody through this thing in life," Aburn said. "They are a young couple starting out with a new home and a new car, new jobs and now this."

Police say the suspects attempted to set four cars on fire and broke into 20 others along Moul Avenue and Blossom and Spencer Drive. They've damaged property, stolen valuables and left the victims with little peace of mind.

"The safety we had in our head is broken and everyone is doing what they can to get security cameras and lock down everything they have, and now that nice secure feeling is gone from all of the families that just moved in," Mooney said.

A majority of the victims were families.

Anyone with information may call Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers toll free at 1-800-4PA-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
