The theft of a handgun from a New Holland home brought additional police officers to Garden Spot High School and resulted in the arrest of a student this morning.
New Holland police said the gun owner believed 18-year-old Colt Stewart took the loaded .357 revolver from his home in the 100 block of Blossom Lane Tuesday evening.
Police said because Stewart is a student at Garden Spot, officers were at the school to assist their full-time resource officer when students arrived for classes Wednesday, and Stewart was stopped while entering the school.
He did not have the gun with him, police said.
Because the whereabouts of the gun were unknown, school officials ordered an exterior lockdown of the high school and middle school campus.
Stewart later admitted he took the gun and hid it at his Gordonville home, police said. The revolver eventually was recovered.
During questioning, police said Stewart never indicated he had any intention of taking the gun to school.
He was charged with theft by unlawful taking and committed to Lancaster County Prison on $50,000 cash bail.
