Harrisburg playgrounds on track for much needed upkeep

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

City Council’s Public Works Committee gave the go-ahead Wednesday night for additional funding to purchase wood chips to be placed around all the playground equipment at parks throughout the city.

City leaders say the upkeep is essential to keep playgrounds safe.

It’s been three years since fresh word carpet was spread, something that should be done annually, officials say.

"Kids are out every day playing on these playgrounds, and to actually be able to provide them with a safe place, I am excited about it," Public Works chairwoman Sandra Reid said. "I am very happy that we actually have a plan of action to take care of it."

$22,500 was requested from the City of Harrisburg Act 101 Host Municipality Fee, which is comprised of money Harrisburg receives from the waste processed by the incinerator.

The measure will be up for a full Council vote next week. That is also when the wood chip spreading will be in full swing.
