Danville Salvation Army Summer Feeding Program Up From Last Year

Posted:
Danville, VA - It should be a very busy summer for the Danville Salvation Army. So far their Summer Feeding Program has seen a much higher attendance than years past.

They expect to be able to keep up, but feeding more people comes with more challenges. Last year they averaged about less than 1,000 meals a day. So far this year, they are averaging about 1,400 meals a day.

With that significant increase, they have been needing more people and money. To keep up, they have recruited five more volunteers. They have also received a federal grant to help pay for meals.

While the Salvation Army serves lunch year-round, they say the summer is especially busy because they see a lot of children come in as well. Their guess as to why the numbers are up is because of word of mouth about what they can offer.

"It's not awkward or anything. They come in, receive a meal and they bring their children, bring people that they know. And so it is more of like a come in to a family," said Julinda Davis, Cadet Junior with Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army's Summer Feeding Program is a joint effort with Pittsylvania County Community Action. They share the grant money and staff to feed all of the needy this summer.
