Substance found in York prison mailroom not hazardous

Posted: Updated:
YORK, Pa. (WHTM) -

Three employees of the York County Prison were evaluated at a hospital after they were potentially exposed to an unknown white substance that turned out to be non-hazardous, according to a county spokesman.

The employees were opening mail when the powdery substance was discovered Friday around 11:30 a.m., spokesman Carl Lindquist said in a news release.

The employees drove themselves to a hospital as a precaution.

The mailroom was closed and the HVAC airflow to the area was temporarily turned off until the York County Hazmat Team advised the prison that the substance was not hazardous, Lindquist said.

Mailroom operations were expected to resume as normal.

There was no impact on other prison operations, including visitation.

Lindquist said no inmates were exposed to the powder because the mailroom is located in a non-secure area of the prison separate from inmate housing.
