UPDATE: Driver of SUV Traveling the Wrong Way on I-81 Identified

UPDATE: State Police have identified 40 year old Kenneth Charles Craft of Roanoke as the driver of the SUV that was driving the wrong direction.  Craft was airlifted to the hospital.

Montgomery Co., VA – Virginia State Police say three people have been airlifted from a serious accident on I-81 in Montgomery County near mile marker 130.7.

According to state police, a late 1990’s SUV side-swiped at least three vehicles after traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the interstate.

State police say the driver of the SUV was partially ejected from the vehicle after hitting a Lexus Sudan head-on. The SUV also caught on fire. The driver was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries.

The driver or the Lexus and a passenger were also flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The condition of their injuries is not known at this time.

Earlier, the left lane of the interstate was closed and traffic was being re-routed off of exit 128, state police said.

Since then, VDOT reports the northbound lanes of I-81 are back open.

A Suburu was also involved in the crash. The driver of that car was taken by ambulance to Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

State Police stress the investigation is still in the very early stages. Updates will follow.
