LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) -
Franklin & Marshall College will arm sworn campus police officers in September, according to a release from the college.
The College's Board of Trustees made the decision on Monday to give firearms to sworn members of the public safety department, non-sworn officers will not be armed.
On- and off-campus training of sworn officers will begin now and extend through August.
In that three month time, the Department of Public Safety will also order equipment, construct secure storage and maintenance spaces for the firearms, and have policies and procedures undergo a thorough legal review.
The school says that by September, sworn members will undergo qualification procedures and prior to the side arms being issued, the officers will undergo more than 30 hours of additional training on use of the specific side arms.
