Family of man charged in Cullman shooting speaks

Posted: Updated:
CULLMAN COUNTY - AL -
The family of a Cullman County man charged in connection with Sunday night's fatal shooting of a registered sex offender talked with ABC 33/40 Tuesday, sharing their side of the story and events leading up to the incident.

Jay Maynor, 41,  is accused in the shooting death of 59-year-old Raymond Earl Brooks, who was convicted of a sex crime involving Maynor's young daughter -- Julia Maynor Church -- several years ago. Brooks was found dead at a home off Highway 278, and Maynor has since been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Church, who is the step-granddaughter of the shooting victim, said she was raped repeatedly by Brooks as a child, but she didn't tell anyone until she was 8 years old.

"I was so young I don't remember when it started," Church said. "When I finally told someone I was 8."

Church and her siblings believe their father was trying to protect them when he allegedly killed his daughter's abuser.

"For the first time in my life I don't feel scared," Church said. "For the first time in my life I don't wake up feeling fear."

While Maynor's family doesn't know the exact details leading up to the killing, they say they believe their dad likely lost control of his emotions, which were reportedly kept private for years.

"We have no idea," Church said. "He's kept it bottled in so long he couldn't keep it bottled in no more."

Investigators declined to speculate whether the shooting was related to the 2002 sex abuse case involving Brooks, only confirming that the victim was a registered sex offender.

"Mr. Brooks had been convicted in a sex crime regarding Mr Maynor's step child," Max Bartlett, Cullman Co. Chief Deputy said.

Relatives of Brooks declined ABC 33/40's interview request.
