Friends of man who died trying to stop a robbery call him their hero

BIRMINGHAM - AL - A man killed while trying to protect his neighbor is being remembered by family and friends. Police say Arthur Mills was shot while trying to stop a burglary at his neighbor's home. Davarius McGee is charged with attempted murder and robbery. Wednesday night, Mills' family and the neighbors he protected held a vigil.  

"He always wanted to come to the aid of somebody," Yvette Sims, the neighbor's daughter said.

For Yvette Sims, it was her mother. Sunday night, her neighbor Arthur heard the burglary happening across the street. He ran over to help stop it and was killed.  Yvette says, his bravery saved her mother's life.  

"I started praying for him immediately but when I found out he died it was like someone stabbed me," Sims said. "I felt like I went down because I knew a good person had left this world."

Arthur's neighbor, Roni Marie, saw it happen.  

"They were trying to pull her back into the house to kill her," Roni Marie Frazier, a neighbor said. "A real man would not stand there and wait on the police."

She said Arthur didn't hesitate and his act of courage prevented others from being injured.  

"For Arthur to come to the aid of this elderly woman shows an act of bravery, an act of courage," Michael Crenshaw, a friend said. "I'm proud of him for putting his life on the line. No greater love has a man than to lay down his life to save another person's life."

Wednesday night, his mom, family members, and friends living on 3rd Place SouthWest gathered in front of his home to pray.  

"I believe if he could do it, he would do it all over again. He would lay down his life," Sims said. "If you leave something on this earth, you can feel like your life was worth living. Arthur's life was truly worth living. We are blessed to have known him." 

 Mills' funeral is set for this Saturday at 1 pm. It will be held at the First Baptist Church in Ensley.
