Pa. Lottery warns of Facebook scam

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) -

Pennsylvania Lottery officials have issued a warning after discovering that thieves are using the lottery's name and logo to try to scam people on Facebook.

Officials said it's easy to copy and paste the Lottery's logo. The scammers make a friend request on Facebook and then message the person telling them their name appears on a Pennsylvania Lottery list.

At that point, the victim is directed to a website telling them to pay money in order to collect a prize. That prize, officials said, is bogus.

A lottery spokesman said it's easy to spot a scam.

"If you're contacted out of the blue by someone claiming you won a prize, if that person asks for personal or financial information or tells you that you have to pay to claim a prize, those are the ways to know right away that it is a scam," Lottery spokesman Gary Miller said.

Another warning sign is if you never played the lottery in the first place.
