JEFFERSON COUNTY, Alabama -- A Center Point man was arrested Friday in connection with an investigation into recent incidents of vandalism at four churches in Birmingham, Hueytown and Pleasant Grove, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

Eja Cree, 31, was taken into custody around 5 p.m. for questioning and later charged with first-degree criminal mischief. According to Chief Deputy Randy Christian, Cree told investigators the Holy Spirit told him to "get the word out" about the return of Jesus. In doing so, Cree allegedly spray-painted the word "memeneusha" on walls, doors and other areas of the church properties. According to the suspect, the word means "Jesus is coming."

Cree was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a $15,000 bond.

Christian said an investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are expected.
