Ephrata police arrested a skateboarder who allegedly tried to stab an officer with a large knife.
Brian Hummel was charged with aggravated assault following an incident early Wednesday in the downtown area near State and Main streets, according to a police news release.
Hummel on several occasions rode his skateboard down the middle of the roadway and interfered with construction workers painting roadway lines, police said.
An officer stopped Hummel around 1:20 a.m. and told him he would be cited for violating the borough's skateboarding ordinance, but he was later seen skateboarding in the first block of East Main Street and was injuring himself with a large knife, police said.
When police investigated, Hummel allegedly charged and attempted to stab the officer through a police vehicle window, but the officer was able to pull away without being injured.
Hummel was taken into custody after being ordered to the ground by several officers.
He was taken to Ephrata Hospital for treatment of numerous cuts to his arm, police said.
