Pa. House votes for wider access to overdose drug

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has voted to allow wider access to a drug that can stop fatal heroin and opioid overdoses.

The House on Tuesday passed an amendment to Senate Bill 1164 that would allow heroin and opioid addicts and their family and friends to obtain the life-saving drug naloxone, also known as Narcan.

Narcan can stop or reverse an overdose long enough for an ambulance or other first responders to take the person to a hospital.

Senate Bill 1164 would provide immunity from prosecution for certain drug crimes to those who report drug overdoses.
