Corbett gets bill to protect police K9s

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) -

Legislation to toughen penalties against anyone who severely injures or kills a police animal is awaiting the signature of Governor Tom Corbett.

Senate Bill 1261 and House Bill 2026 would amend current law to upgrade the crime from a third- to a second-degree felony, which carries $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

The legislation would also increase the penalty for torturing a police dog.

The combined bills are known as Rocco’s Law and are named after a Pittsburgh canine officer that died after he was stabbed in while helping police arrest a suspect in January.
