HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - The findings of a Joint State Government Commission report of a statewide childhood obesity study were released.

The nearly year-long study was the result of an advisory committee comprised of various experts in the field.

The reports included 40 recommendations to curb the problem in Pennsylvania. It included nutrition information and counseling for pregnant women and caregivers, a complete re-evaluation of food programs in school districts and encourages schools to have physical education classes for the entire year.

The report also recommends the formation of a permanent statewide Childhood Health and Wellness Advisory Council makeup of private and public experts.

State Representative Seth Grove (R-York) was behind the bill that prompted the study. He held a press conference to announce its finding Wednesday morning.

“The latest figures indicate an alarming 26-28 percent of children in Pennsylvania are either overweight or obese,” Grove said. “We want to see if we can continue to move forward to decrease that percentage.”

Grove said addressing health issues related to obesity will now will help with the cost of healthcare for everyone.
