Bedford Co., VA – Three law enforcement officers were honored Friday for saving two men from drowning at a Bedford County pond in May.

Conservation Police Officer Dallas Neel with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and Deputy Tim Shull and Corporal Robby Nash with the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office were each presented a plaque. The recognition took place at a news conference at the Sheriff’s Office.

On May 16, Constantine Rosko, 84, and his son Curt Rosko, 54, were removing an aerator pump on their private pond on Krantz’s Corner Road when their boat capsized. The two men held onto the boat and tried to get to shore, but an anchor that had been inside the boat kept them from moving. Maurene Rosko, Constantine’s wife, was watching from the shore and called 911.

Officer Neel, Deputy Shull, and Corporal Nash were all nearby when the call came in and responded to the pond. Neel threw a lifesaver to the men, but they were unable to reach it. Neel and Shull then removed their duty belts and vests and swam to the men. Nash threw out a rope and pulled the four men to shore.

Constantine and Curt Rosko were at Friday’s event to thank the officers in person. They also received thanks from Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown and Lieutenant Chris Thomas with DGIF.
